Description: Grows all over the mountains and hills most commonly in Jordan, Israel, Syria &Lebanon other Arab world) The taste of a Za'atar mixture canbe tangy, herbal, nutty, or toasty.Lebanese variety is a bit more sour & nutty, balancestartness of sumac with the nutty flavor of sesame seeds.
Ingredients: Wild Thyme, toasted Sesame Seeds, Sumac, Coriander, Salt, Citric Acid. (Every region has his/her unique mixing formula)
Uses: Za'atar is used as a seasoning for meats and vegetables or sprinkled ontohummus. It is also eaten with labneh (yogurt drained to make a tangy, creamy cheese). Mixed with olive oil it makes a spread called za'atar-wu-zayt as a dip for the sesame bread rings known as ka'ak. You can spread iton a dough base & bake it as bread, in which case it is called manaeeshIt’s belief that za'atar makes the mind alert and the body strong
